In the last year, three very different cities – Philadelphia; El Paso, Texas; and Norfolk, Virginia – launched significant efforts to “reform and reframe the built environment.”  According to the National League of Cities, the unifying factor connecting the three cities’ efforts is their aggressive drive to include residents as citizen planners.

This is a 3d version of the Chaparral Street Improvements proposed in the 2008 Bond that voters approved 4 years ago. This is all part of an effort to make downtown Corpus Christi more pedestrian friendly as well as bring more life to downtown.

Recently, I posted an article on the Living Labs Global blog, Report on Mobility, which prompted someone to comment on the distinction between open data and actual information.  Raw data are valuable, but the information synthesized from the data is golden.  My experiences this summer continue to highlight the need not only for better data, but also for better information.

Many municipalities across the country have been exploring recent Gov2.0 tools, including “ideation” platforms, in hopes of finding ways to help combat common issues of towns losing money, property revenues declining and jobs going away.  Such ideation platforms like Ideascale  and Spigit, create a place for citizens or employees to submit, rank, and follow up on ideas that can save money and improve services.

Earlier this year we introduced the great research and development initiatives in Manor, Texas.  Like so many other cities, the changes in Manor were prompted by tightening budgets and dwindling resources.  But unlike other cities, Manor introduced more innovative methods to their fight for survival and were rewarded with wonderful results.

It’s not often that one is able to use the words ‘research and development’ when describing new initiatives within their local government.  If you’re one of the lucky 6,500 people living in Manor, Texas, research and development just entered a new era.  This small community on the outskirts of Austin has partnered with Stanford University’s Peace Dot Project to create Manor Labs, the official research and development division of the City of Manor.
