In the last year, three very different cities – Philadelphia; El Paso, Texas; and Norfolk, Virginia – launched significant efforts to “reform and reframe the built environment.”  According to the National League of Cities, the unifying factor connecting the three cities’ efforts is their aggressive drive to include residents as citizen planners.

It’s worth noting that there are now websites created just for that reason, such as VoteSmart.org’s “VoteEasy” platform. But it may not have crossed your mind that elected representatives and their political allies in the state legislatures will have pre-selected their voters by creating partisan electoral districts through the manipulation of maps.

ACTion Alexandria

ACT for Alexandria has devoted itself to philanthropic endeavors in Alexandria, Virginia since it’s formation in 2002.  Initially sparked by a large donation, the foundation continues to work towards addressing the needs of the community while also assisting those who want to join in making positive changes throughout the city.  ACT bridges the gap between those who want to help but don’t know how and organizations in need.
