Check out live streaming of CNU 20's - Looking Forward: New Urbanism and the New World. As the Congress for New Urbanism enters its third decade, economic, political, and environmental conditions pose serious challenges for the built and natural environment, as well as New Urbanist practice. Three of CNU's Founders will open this session with lectures addressing these challenges. Andres Duany will present the 21st century crises that call for New Urbanists to adapt, including slow development, the public process, suburban retrofit, agricultural urbanism, and the theology of metrics. Dan Solomon will discuss the tensions between new urbanism's roots in the nuanced complexity of the city and the reductive codifying of New Urbanist practice.

Editor's Note: This event has concluded; live stream may no longer be available. Check back here, or on cnu20.org, for archive links of this session.

When it comes to politics we can often pinpoint precisely where two candidates clash with each other.  As the arena grows more issue-centric, people may tend to tuck themselves inside information silos unknowingly, becoming inflexible or even unwilling to view other opinions or facts. The political current may be full of discontent and partisan division, but instead of focusing on this, why not concentrate on more meaningful public conversations that can move us forward? Is knowing where we agree a better place to start a conversation? Enter the Community Forums Network for Washington state, seeking out the prime spot for agreement.

One after the other, residents stood at the microphone and begged the planning staff at a public meeting not to recommend yet another highrise on the edge of a single family residential neighborhood in downtown Burlington, Ont. The Official Plan called for a seven story building ; the proposed development was double that. Residents wanted to know why. If the Official Plan was good planning, why go beyond it? Conversely, if double the height was good planning, why wasn’t that in the Official Plan in the first place?

When it comes to learning more about applying technology in the work of governments, especially local governments planning and improving urban areas, there are a lot of topics to wade through — part of what makes the space so exciting, but also daunting when it comes to finding the people who care about the same thing that you do.

Public space (read: social, civic, democratic) is not easy to grasp, create or sustain. It is eternally becoming as it changes with social flows and physical interventions.  Participation is a similarly slippery term, especially since it has become diluted and misused. In many ways, you cannot have public space without participation.
